moments

the greatest baseball films of all time - bull durham, field of dreams, bad news bears - have very little to do with baseball at all. instead they attempt to present a cautionary tale through the allegorical lens of america's favorite pastime. and so as i stood near first base in the pouring rain yesterday and watched the finest season in the history of varsity girls' softball slowly unwind before my eyes, i couldn't help but feel that the game of baseball is somehow best understood as a metaphorical sketch of another game we all play - that of life. (why the hell doesn't youtube offer a loop function so i don't hafta keep hitting "replay" on firefly every four minutes?) for me, the sport of my youth is really all about the moments. big moments and small moments. because every moment has the potential to go the other way. every catch. every hit. every throw. every dropped ball. every missed tag. every mental error. one great play may lead to one outcome. one errant play may lead to another. it's enough to drive a coach insane. (yum yum yum. midnight chip run. barbecue flavoured. had to get my own bag after some nameless kid refused to share his/her/its stash today.) yet just like the game of life itself, we all keep coming back for more. at least i do. and so despite the pain and the heartbreak and the disappointment of yesterday's match, the potential for joy and triumph and satisfaction seems to provide just enough incentive to step up to the plate one more time. (hey, there's the fellow with scoliosis on sytycd again. inspiring stuff. and the kid has a great name.) moments. that's what it's all about in the end. moments. and how we respond to them.

now that's what i'm talkin' about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vOjrChYDVE&feature=related

p.s. to comment #5 - and that's what i'm talkin' about as well

  1. the fact that you are still talking about baseball means that you are still upset about your championship loss... stop thinking about it, there will always be next season when you will indefinitely come in first place.

  2. ^ see if I wasn't me, I probably would have thought that the above comment came from me... BUT THEN I READ THE LAST SENTENCE and I was like, "No, that's definitely not me!"

    anyway...

i see the references to yours truely.

P.S. I would prefer it if you were to keep the nature of my identity ambigious by changing "...after some nameless kid refused to share her stash today" to "...after some nameless kid refused to share her[/HIS] stash today"

you see, you're already giving away my identity with your negligence.

Inconsistency is not a funny matter.
Of course, you don't care! You're too busy watching people walk down a very steep hill at a 45 degree angle.

& one more thing, stop with the subliminal messaging will ya?
